Part 1
Good morning Central KS and around the world; thank you for joining us this 17th day of December, 2023, as we are right on top of the Christmas season. We will celebrate Christmas eve next Sunday, and Mix 103 has asked me to produce a 4 hour Christmas show which I will do for next Sunday. Right now, welcome to “Message at the Top” for this Sunday, December 17. Get set for the top 10 songs of our area right now as determined by the research from your requests, people like Taylor Swift and Luke Combs, and get ready for some top 10 songs of the past as well including people like Pitbull and Ed Sheeran. And we will call to mind a number of birthdays this week. I am Fr. Mike and you have your dial set to Mix 103, number one in Central Kansas. Our number 1 song last week was from Jelly Roll. We’ll see if he stays there today.
If there is one thing that this time of year brings up, it is the whole topic of giving. The time in and around Christmas has always had that topic as part of what the world remembers at this time. I have gone on record as saying that I wish the world would pay attention to what we are celebrating a little more, but it is very good that we always think in terms of giving to one another. To my mind, it is one of the most important topics for leadership as well. There are a number of quotations about “giving” in the motivational books that I have access to. One of those quotes comes from one of the tributes to Princess Diana. It could easily have been the guide to her life: it reads: “When I was in trouble you cared about me, when I was in danger you tried to stop it, when I was sick you visited me, when people ran away you took my hand, whatever you did for the poorest and smallest of people, I felt as if you did it for me.”
Every religious leader in our history has spoken on the importance of being able to give to others. From Jesus to Mohammad, from Moses to Confucius, being able to give is essential.
Giving is the topic of the Goo Goo Dolls’ remake of a song that was released by Supertramp a number of years ago. “Give a little bit of your love to me,” they sing. “I’ll give a little bit of my love to you. There’s so much that we need to share, so send a smile and show you care. Give a little bit of your time to me, see the man with the lonely eyes—(namely him, the person who is singing)—take his hand, you’ll be surprised. I’ll give a little bit of my life for you. Now’s the time that we need to share, so find yourself, we’re on our way back home.”
I like that thought of “finding yourself.” A person can find oneself best by learning to give to another. There will be an opportunity for some pretty good quotes on giving to others in our show today, but let’s start with the inspiration. It was one of the songs of meaning of 2004, and is a very important song in my opinion—everyone of us should do some thinking about how much we are giving to one another. From their album, “Let Love In,” a beautiful thought in itself, this is one of the excellent songs of meaning of 2004, the group Goo Goo Dolls, “Give A Little Bit” on MATT.

GIVE LOVE / Andy Grammer f/ Lunchmoney Lewis
Part 2
From his album “The Good Parts,” Andy Grammer and joining him Gamal “Lunchmoney” Lewis and their song “Give Love” on MATT. He began by calling his mother a “sunshine soldier” which is an agent of change, and the change that she suggests is that we give love: “I give love to all of my people; all of my people need love; I give some. ‘Cause in the end, the love we take’s got nothing on the love we make. So, give love. She said, ‘You’re gonna be a light in a cold world, you got extra love pumping in your veins.’ To my people feeling down and my people feeling empty, I got so much of this love, I gotta give it away.” Now, I could talk long and hard about his sunshine soldier mother because I think it ultimately means God, but that’s beside the point. The point is that we can give love to people who need it, “giving” being our theme today. What a song.
The beginning of this first triple play uses the catch words “Ho” and “Hey” throughout the song and the group tells a story of a person who is looking for love. “I’ve been trying to do it right,” they sing, “I’ve been living a lonely life. So show me family, all the blood that I would bleed. I don’t know where I belong, I don’t know where I went wrong, but I can write a song. I belong to you, you belong with me, you’re my sweetheart. Look at what it might have been. Love, we need it now, let’s hope for some ‘cause we’re bleeding out.” Indeed, we need love now and always, and the conclusion of the song is that we need to give, our theme today, that love to others. From their album “The Lumineers”, a group who were formed in the year 2005, and are now based out of Denver, Colorado and their song “Ho Hey” from the year 2012 on MATT.

10 GREEDY / Tate McRae
Part 3
We will give you the top 10 in countdown fashion today, and that was number 10, new to our top 10 from Tate McRae and her song “Greedy” from her album “Think Later.” She writes that she wrote the song to talk about having the confidence to know what you want. “He said, ‘Are you serious?” she begins the song, “I’ve tried, but I can’t figure out; I’ve been next to you all night and still don’t know what you’re about. You keep talking, but not much coming out your mouth. Can’t you tell that I want you?” And she continues, “I would want myself. Please believe me, I’ll put you through hell. Just to know me, so sure of yourself. Don’t get greedy, that stuff won’t end well.” And then she says that he still wants her, but she repeats her refrain, basically saying “Don’t get greedy.” The lady in the song seems to have the confidence of knowing what she wants, and it is, as she says, “I would want myself.” I changed a word in the song. Confidence in oneself is a good thing, to be sure, and it means among other things that the person will decide how much to give of oneself, “giving” being our theme today.
Before her, we wished happy birthday to Sia Kate Isobelle Furler who will be 48 tomorrow. The song was from her album “This is Acting” and her song “Cheap Thrills” from 2016. It is a song about having fun by dancing on a weekend. “Come on, turn the radio on,” she sings, “It’s Friday night and I won’t be long. Gotta do my hair, I put my make-up on. I won’t be long till I hit the dance floor. I got all I need. No, I ain’t got no cash. I don’t need dollar bills to have fun tonight. I love cheap thrills. I don’t need no money as long as I keep dancing.” So a dance song of happiness. Tying it into our theme, she is giving of herself by dancing and having fun.
Every song has a message, and that is what we are all about here on MATT—discovering the messages located in the songs. Our lead song came from the Goo Goo Dolls and their song from the past “Give a Little Bit.” I’m Fr. Mike inviting you to stay with us. After a short break, we will continue our presentation of the top 10 of today and the 2000’s, and some 90’s and 80’s. We need these breaks so that we can thank our sponsors from time to time. Let me take you to break with a hopeful thought from Mother Teresa, no less: “It’s not how much you give, but how much love you put into giving.” A pretty good guide for giving. Your dial is set for interesting stuff, media-style—Mix 103 and you are listening to “Message at the Top”.
+++COMMERCIAL BREAK+++
Part 4
You are in tune with MATT, your top 10 show on the best mix of music around these parts, Mix 103. We call it MATT because we take the top 10 songs of our area, and study their messages in the hopes that our lives that are often so complicated because of our lifestyles, those lives can be better by using the messages of the songs that we play. I’m Fr. Mike, your host, and it is great to have you with us this third Sunday of the winter month of December, almost Christmas in the heartland. The theme that we are using today came from a song of the Goo Goo Dolls and their song that may be sort of a theme song for this time of year, “Give a Little Bit.”
Let’s begin this portion of our show with a song about jealousy. “I don’t like the way he’s looking at you,” he sings, “I’m starting to think you want him too. Am I crazy, have I lost ya? Even though I know you love me, can’t help it. Turn my cheek, music up, and I’m puffing my chest; I’m getting red in the face. You can call me obsessed. It’s not your fault that they hover. I mean no disrespect. It’s my right to be hellish. I still get jealous ‘cause you’re too sexy, beautiful, and everybody wants a taste. That’s why I still get jealous.” Jealousy is an evil in life. It can destroy good relationships, and a person obsessed with jealousy usually will not be able to make a sincere commitment. That may not be always true, but it is most of the time, I think. And a remedy to it would be that the couple be open to each other and learn to give to each other, “giving” being our theme today. This is one of the Jonas brothers, namely Nick and his song from his album named after him and it is called “Jealous,” from 2014 on MATT.
(double) JEALOUS / Nick Jonas
9 DIAL DRUNK / Noah Kahan f/ Post Malone
Part 5
Continuing our countdown at number 9, we hear a song of pain from Noah Kahan and often sung with Austin Richard Post, better known as Post Malone and their song “Dial Drunk” from Kahan’s album “Stick Season” on MATT. The story in song is that the man in the relationship is still hanging on to the relationship even though it is over. He is guilty of a DUI, and has given to the police her number to call, and she won’t answer. Pretty tough situation. “I’m remembering I promised to forget you now,” they sing, “but it’s raining, and I’m calling drunk. I don’t like that when they threw me in the car, I gave your name as my emergency phone call. It rang and rang even the cops thought you were wrong for hanging up. I dial drunk, I’ll die a drunk, I’d die for you.” And a line that says it all, I believe: “I’m untethering from the parts of me you’d recognize / and the dial tone is all I have.” Some real pain sung about there. And in terms of our theme, to learn to continue giving to others even though we are in pain is a statement of real character.
And right away, let’s go to our number 8 song from Luke Combs. It is a story in song without a happy ending. It is a story that comes from Ms. Tracy Chapman who we will hear later and this was one of her 1988 songs, and its title is the symbol of what many believe to be the answer to happiness, a fast car. Ultimately, it is a song about a life that didn’t work out the way the person wanted. In the story, she wants to have “a feeling that I belonged” as she says. And so, she sets out to fulfill that ambition. She believes the feeling of “being someone” can be accomplished by the fast car. But she changed her mind when she discovered that her family needed her; a good ideal didn’t last. And the song closes without her having accomplished her goals, and still looking to be someone. So, the story of someone who never quite made it for her to “be someone.” She had some elements of giving, our theme today, and you’re led to believe that if she would learn to give a little more, she might “be someone”. It is the number 8 song on our countdown right now from his album “Gettin Old”, Mr. Luke Combs, former number 1 and his song “Fast Car” on MATT.
(triple) 8 FAST CAR / Luke Combs
BEAUTIFUL / Christina Aguilera bd
7 DANCE THE NIGHT / Dua Lipa
Part 6
Another former number 1, from the soundtrack of the record-breaking movie “Barbie”, a movie that had all kinds of nominations with the Globe awards, the first song in the top 10 from that movie today, that was Albanian singer/songwriter Ms. Dua Lipa and the name of her song, “Dance the Night”, number 7 this week on MATT. It is a song all about doing something that feels good and not talking about the problems of a relationship, that is in particular, a song about dancing in order to hide problems. And with that scenario, very little hope unless she wakes up to what she is doing. “Baby, you can find me under the lights,” she sings, “Diamonds under my eyes. Turn the rhythm up, don’t you wanna just come along for the ride? Pull my outfits up tight, you can see my heartbeat tonight. I can take the heat, best believe, that’s the moment I shine. ‘Cause every romance shakes and it bends, don’t give a damn. When the night’s here, I don’t do tears, no chance. I could dance. Watch me dance, dance the night away. My heart could be burning but you won’t see it on my face. Watch me dance, dance the night away.” She is dancing instead of facing some problems in her life, and if this relationship is to work, she is going to have to learn to give a little of herself, “giving” being our theme today.
Before her, we wished happy birthday to Christina Aguilera who will be 43 tomorrow, and we played her song “Beautiful” from 2003 her album “Stripped.”. “Every day is so wonderful, then suddenly, it’s hard to breathe,” she sings. “Now and then I get insecure, from all the pain, I’m so ashamed. I am beautiful no matter what they say. Words can’t bring me down. I am beautiful in every single way. Yes, words can’t bring me down, so don’t you bring me down today.” The problem is that words can bring us down, and often do. I think that this is a high song of meaning because it implies that words should not bring us down, and indeed they should not—because we are all beautiful in our own way. As we think of our theme today, thinking of who we are and how beautiful we are no matter what, is a real gift.
Our show is full of good advice from these top 10 songs, and great messages from those songs, even if we have to stretch the meanings of the songs a little bit. The title of MATT today is “Giving.” The Goo Goo Dolls gave us the thought as we think of this season and their song “Give a Little Bit.” Our next 30 minutes of music and message will explore that theme with numbers 6 through 3 on our countdown, as well as music from birthday person David Cook and Ed Sheeran. Here is a quote about age from Mr. Mark Twain: “Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.” I can understand that. I’m Fr. Mike for “Message at the Top”. Don’t even think about touching that dial!

Part 7
We are back, and as that fine announcer just said, we are MATT on Mix 103, as we celebrate the third Sunday of December together. I hope it is a good one for you. This is “Message at the Top”. I’m Fr. Mike, ready to lead you through another 30 minutes of music and message today. All of our songs this morning are working on a theme which takes the songs’ meanings, and ties them into the thought of this season of the year, namely “giving”.
Continuing our countdown, let’s go to number 6 right now and a song about a relationship that started at a party, he says, where he saw a girl who stood out from other girls in his mind, but her friends didn’t approve, and finally after a while they got together. He begins the song “Baby, calm down, girl, your body is put in my heart for lockdown. You sweet like Fanta. If I tell you, say, ‘I love you’, you know they tell me ‘no.’ Finally, I find way to talk to the girl but her friends gum up the meeting like chewing gum.” And she says, “Yeah, I know I look shy but for you I get down.” As we think about our theme today, he learned to give of himself to her even with the problems, and it brought about the relationship that he wanted. From Nigerian singer Rema’s album “Rave and Roses” and singing with him, Selena Gomez, former number 1, and their song “Calm Down” number 6 on MATT.
(triple) 6 CALM DOWN / Rema & Selena Gomez
PERFECT / Ed Sheeran
5 LIL BOO THANG / Paul Russell
Part 8
Our theme last week when we talked about a “good time”, Paul Russell and his song at number 5, “Lil Boo Thang” on MATT. In an interview with Billboard, he says, “I think what makes the song special is the fact that so many of us are ready to just forget about whatever is happening around us and enjoy the good things in life—not just thinking back to good times in the past but creating new ones in the present day.” So, it is a feel good song that unfolds the tale of looking to have a good time with friends. The words say that he is yearning for romance even as the person he is thinking of is spoken for. But probably what is most important is that the song brings about a good feeling, and one of the helps to learning to give, our theme today, is to be able to feel good about life.
Before him, we heard the number 1 song of meaning and the number 1 song of popularity of all the songs of 2018 from Mr. Ed Sheeran, from his album which is just a division sign, “Perfect”. “I found a love for me,” he begins the song, “just dive right in and follow my lead. I found a girl, beautiful and sweet, I never knew you were the someone waiting for me ‘cause we were just kids when we fell in love, not knowing what it was. I will not give you up this time, your heart is all I own and in your eyes you’re holding mine. When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath, but you heard it, you look perfect tonight.” One of the important resolutions for people in love is that they show it in as perfect a way as possible by giving to one another, our theme today. And for those who are not in love in a romantic way, we ought to learn giving to others in as perfect a way as possible also, a little spiritual thought there.
Going back into our countdown right now, and we are up to number 4 which has a great video to it which the singer directed herself. In my opinion, it is the thought of a person growing up in a world that sometimes is too complicated. “I used to float,” she sings, “now I just fall down. I used to know, but I’m not sure now. What was I made for? Takin’ a drive, I was an ideal, looked so alive, turns out I’m not real. I don’t know how to feel, but I wanna try. Someday I might.” And she closes the song in a hopeful manner: “Think I forgot how to be happy, something I’m not, but something I can be, something I’m made for.” So, her answer to the question of her song: what was I made for?—is “to be happy.” That is a hopeful statement because as we strive for happiness, we will see—as she says, that it is something we’re made for. And in terms of our theme this week, a person with this much hope will be a person who can give a little more. It is her birthday tomorrow when she will be 22. From the soundtrack of the movie “Barbie” again, this is Billie Eilish—happy birthday to her–at number 4, “What was I Made For?” another great song on MATT.
(triple) 4 WHAT WAS I MADE FOR / Billie Eilish
LIGHT ON / David Cook bd
3 CRUEL SUMMER / Taylor Swift
Part 9
The numbers get smaller and the hits get bigger, as Casey Kasum used to say, God rest his soul, and at number 3 is the very popular Time’s person of the year, Ms. Taylor Swift, and that song from her album “Lovers”, the name of the song, “Cruel Summer”, former number 1 on MATT. The song tells us that we really have to work at a relationship, and if we don’t, it will lead to some tough times. “Fever dream high in the quiet of the night,” she begins the song, “You know that I caught it. Bad boy, killing me slow, out the window, I’m always waiting for you to be waiting below. Devils roll the dice; angels roll their eyes. What doesn’t kill me makes me want you more. I’m drunk in the back of the car and I cried like a baby coming home from the bar; said, ‘I’m fine,’ but it wasn’t true; I don’t wanna keep secrets just to keep you. Oh, it’s a cruel summer. He looks up grinning like the devil.” That relationship is just beginning, and both will soon see that in order to keep it going, both have to learn to give to one another, our theme today.
Before her, we heard from birthday person David Cook, American Idol number 7—he will be 41 on Wednesday—happy birthday to him, and the name of his song, “Light On” from his album “David Cook” from 2008. The person in the song wants to get a relationship back after it has ceased for some reason. “Try to leave a light on when I’m gone,” he sings in the refrain. “Something I rely on to get home, one I can feel at night, a naked light, a fire to keep me warm. Try to leave a light on when I’m gone. Even in the daylight, shine on, and when it’s late at night you can look inside. You won’t feel so alone.” Apparently, this type of break up has happened before as he sings, “You know we’ve been down that road what seems a thousand times before. Sometimes it feels like we’ve run out of luck when the signal keeps on breaking up.” Breakups are always difficult, and in order to get back together, both of the couple will have to learn to give a little more, “giving” being our theme today.
That is our thought today as we ask our songs what they have to say about “giving.” Get ready for a final segment that will give you songs from our top 10 that we haven’t played yet, that is numbers 2 and 1. We also have music from songs that have “give” in their titles. Before we get there, here is another inspiring thought from American evangelist Billy Sunday who died in 1935: “Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than going to a garage makes you an automobile.” You bet. My name is Fr. Mike; this show is MATT; this station is Mix 103, and we’ll be right back!
COMMERCIAL BREAK
Part 10
Welcome back to the show that gives you the top 10 of today and yesterday along with their messages. We call it MATT. I’m your host, Fr. Mike, and we have taken off from an idea of the Goo Goo Dolls and we’re talking about the idea of giving. It’s great to have you with us as we are celebrating the third Sunday of the cool month of December together, almost Christmas. Happy shopping, everyone!
As I said, let’s go to some songs of the past which have “give” in their titles, and we will begin with the group New Radicals, a band which was only active for a couple of years in the late 90’s. They were known for this song. “When the night is falling,” they sing, “And you cannot find the light. If you feel your dream is dying, hold tight. You’ve got the music in you. One dance left. This world is gonna pull through. Don’t give up. You’ve got a reason to live. Can’t forget you only get what you give.” Now that is a reality statement if I have ever heard one. The group is encouraging the young person to hang in there, to recognize the reality of the negativism that surrounds us, but at the same time, not to give up. One must deal with reality front and center, and even if it is negative, let’s stay in the world, and help. As we work with the theme of giving, we have to learn to give up the negative things that pull us down, and give in to those virtues that build us up. A great song whose title contains the thought of giving, our theme today, one of the top 3 “give” songs of meaning, from the 90’s, New Radicals, and “You Get What You Give” on MATT.
(triple) YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE / New Radicals
GIVE ME ONE REASON / Tracy Chapman
GIVE ME EVERYTHING / Pitbull f/ Ne-Yo
Part 11
The artists there are Pitbull and Ne Yo and their song “Give Me Everything” from the year 2011 from Pitbull’s album “Planet Pit” on MATT. They begin the song with the man in the relationship saying that he is into the partying scene because he is rewarding himself: “Took my life from negative to positive: I just want you to know that, and tonight, let’s enjoy life. Tonight I want all of you, tonight. Give me everything tonight for all we know we might not get tomorrow. Let’s do it tonight.” And the whole song is a come-on to get as much as possible the night of the party. There are a lot of sexual overtones in the song, and one of the important facts about life is that if people move into a sexual relationship, there must be some serious thinking because when we give ourselves to others, we must be aware of the commitment that we are making, “giving” being our theme today.
Before them, we went to the year 1996 and Tracy Chapman was the artist from her album “New Beginning”, and the name of the song “Give Me One Reason,” one of our “giving” songs today. We heard one of her songs sung by Luke Combs a little earlier. “Give me one reason to stay here,” she sings here, “and I’ll turn right back around. You got to make me change my mind. This youthful heart can love you and give you what you need, but I’m too old to go chasing around, wasting my precious energy. Give me one reason why I should stay.” In the world of dating and love, there are many who can learn from this song. There are more than a few young people who are part of unhealthy relationships that do nothing more than create victims instead of lovers. Tracy Chapman speaks to them, saying, give your final warning and then get out. In terms of our theme today, sometimes we have to know when to not give to another.
Our last double play of the day begins with Natalie Merchant. The person in the song is aware of what another person has done for her, and so she tells that person: “You’ve been so kind and generous. I’m in debt to you for your selflessness. I never could have come this far without you. I want to thank you for so many gifts you gave with love and tenderness. I want to thank you for your generosity, the love and honesty that you gave me. I want to show my gratitude, my love and my respect for you. Thank you.” Part of giving, our theme today, is the idea of being grateful for the things that we have been given. This is Natalie Merchant and her excellent song from the year 1998 from her album “Ophelia,” “Kind and Generous” on MATT.
(double) KIND AND GENEROUS / Natalie Merchant
2 NEED A FAVOR / Jelly Roll
Part 12
Falling back to number 2, a song that was number 1 a total of three weeks, a 10+ category song on our charts from Jason Bradley DeFord better as Jelly Roll, and his excellent song from his latest album “Whitsitt Chapel,” the song “Need a Favor” on MATT. Its topic is prayer. Speaking the truth of so many people, it says: “I only talk to God when I need a favor, and I only pray when I ain’t got a prayer. So, who the heck am I to expect a Savior if I only talk to God when I need a favor. But God I need a favor! I know Amazing Grace, but I ain’t been livin’ them words. Swear I spend most Sundays drunk than I have in church. Hard cover King James only been savin’ dust on the nightstand, and I don’t know what to say the time I fold my hands. I only talk to God when I need a favor.” I changed some of the words. In terms of our theme today, one of the ways to learn how to give of oneself, is to honestly pray for it.
And our number 1 song this third Sunday of December is back at number 1, now holding that position for four weeks, from her album, “Endless Summer Vacation”—digital reissue, Miley Cyrus, and her song “Used to be Young”. She says of the song: “This song is about honoring who we’ve been, loving who we are and celebrating who we will become. I feel proud when reflecting on my past and optimistic when thinking about the future.” So, the past for her is a good thing, and her future is likewise good. She sings, “The truth is bulletproof. There’s no fooling you. I don’t dress the same, me and who you say I was yesterday have gone our separate ways. Left my living fast somewhere in the past ‘cause that’s for chasing cars, turns out open bars lead to broken hearts and going way too far. I know I used to be crazy, I know I used to be fun; You say I used to be wild, I say I used to be young.” I consider it to be a 10+ category song of meaning because she will not look at the past or present or future as a negative. In terms of our theme, a person with this positive of an attitude will learn to give of oneself on behalf of self and others, a pretty good way to live in our world.
We have talked of that today—giving. And some pretty good insights from the songs that we have played. Let’s close with this thought from one of my favorite authors, Mr. Will Rogers: “Never miss a good chance to shut up.” And the person who learns that will be able to learn more about true giving from others. You bet. My thanks to our producers and our sponsors, in particular Holy Family Elementary School, Hays Car and Truck Alignment, and TMP-Marian High School in Hays. If you want to contact me by mail, I hope you do so at KJLS-FM, Hays, America, 67601 or my e-mail address here at the station is frmikescully@yahoo.com. My website is www.frmikescully.com. where you will find meditations on the Gospels, these songs and movies. Our meditation today is on the final Harry Potter film in which Dumbledore tells Harry some excellent words: “Pity those without love.” Also, Mix 103 is giving MATT four hours for the Message of Christmas next weekend. I hope you spend some time with us then. As you listen to the number 1 song in our country and area right now from Miley Cyrus and her excellent song “Used to be Young,” may I remind you to hold a good thought. Thank you for the privilege of your time today. My name is Fr. Mike Scully. From the beautiful Christmas city of Lawrence, KS, my wish to you is be safe, peace to you, and be good.
